The 2010’s have been a revolutionary decade that saw the advancement of deaf education, employment and entertainment. From the premiere of Switched at Birth to Nyle DiMarco’s historic America’s Next Top Model and Dancing with the Stars wins, deaf people, and by default American Sign Language, have become increasingly mainstream. 2019 is a defining year for deaf progress.

Comcast Now Offers Customer Service In ASL

Today, on International Day of Disabled Persons, Comcast and Connect Direct launched ASL Now, a customer service support via American Sign Language for Internet Essentials, Xfinity Internet, and general Xfinity billing questions. Connect Direct as an ASL call center program that is engined by the Communication Service for the Deaf (CSD). Through ASL Now, Internet Essentials and Xfinity customers with hearing loss can now connect with customer service agents in their native language, ASL – the fourth most-studied language in the United States.

Mental Health: More Than an Awareness Issue

There is a mental health crisis in the deaf community, compounded by information gaps in researching the issue. Various studies offer a range of numbers, with one estimating that approximately 5 million DHH people need mental health treatment annually.



Deaf in Military

Deaf people can’t enlist in the military because they aren’t able to pass the physical requirement of being able to hear beyond a certain threshold. CSD continues to investigate barriers to deaf employment.

Although Communication Service for the Deaf’s headquarters moved from Sioux Falls, South Dakota, to Austin, Texas, in 2012, its roots remain strong in SD. CSD SD’s focus is empowering the state’s D/HH residents and educating the communities they live in.
