2010 NCTA Seminar on East Asia
A Professional Development Seminar for Secondary World History, World Geography, World Literature and Art Teachers

The National Consortium for Teaching about Asia (NCTA) is pleased to announce an NCTA Seminar on East Asia for St. Louis area secondary teachers. This 33-hour seminar offers secondary teachers the opportunity to engage in study, analysis, and discussion of new scholarship related to Chinese and Japanese history, geography, and culture. Content will address the National Standards in World History.
Eligibility: This seminar is open to secondary world geography, world history, world literature and art teachers who are teaching courses that include the study of China and/or Japan at the time of the seminar. Class limit: 20.
Seminar Location: The seminar will meet at the International Education Consortium at the Cooperating School Districts offices at 1460 Craig Rd., St. Louis MO 63146.
Seminar Dates: Saturdays, February 6 and 20; March 6; April 10; and May 1, 2010, from 8:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Two two-hour follow-up sessions in fall 2010. Attendance is required at all meetings.
Participation is free, with the following benefits:
- 33 contact hours of study, curriculum, and discussion with East Asian specialists and fellow educators.
- $175 in seminar texts and materials for each participant.
- $300 participant stipend upon satisfactory completion of the seminar and seminar portfolio project.
- $200 in selected curriculum materials for your school upon successful completion of program in fall 2009.
- Additional $150 stipend upon completion of two follow-up meetings and final reflection in fall 2009
- Graduate credit available Webster University at participant's expense.
- Participants who complete the seminar are eligible for the NCTA regional study tours to Asia, summer 2011.
Expectations: Seminar participants agree to:
- Participate in full 33 contact hours of the seminar;
- Complete all seminar assignments and final project;
- Attend two follow-up sessions in fall of 2010; and
- Complete an evaluation in spring 2010 and a final reflection during fall 2010.
