Cognitive Coaching

Cognitive Coaching is a supervisory/ peer coaching/student model that, capitalizes upon, and enhances cognitive processes. In Cognitive Coaching, the coachee (teacher, student, administrator, parent), not the coach, evaluates what is good or poor, appropriate, effective or ineffective about an event and makes their own suggestions for improvement.

This powerful approach to enhancing practice and building learning organizations focuses on the intellectual skills, perceptions, and decision that underlie effective teaching and communication. Cognitive Coaching supports informed decision-making through strategies that not only enhance intellectual capacities, but increase their capacity to modify oneself.

In Cognitive Coaching participants learn to:

- build trust by developing physical and verbal rapport

- facilitate learning through pausing, paraphrasing, questioning,

- develop greater precision in communication

- develop autonomy and a sense of community by increasing efficacy and self-awareness

- distinguish between coaching and other support functions

- practice coaching interactions which are congruent with a variety of styles

- apply coaching skills which enhance intellectual processes

- plan, reflect and problem-resolve with others effectively and efficiently.
